We look at a typical winter and summer: how warm the days and nights are, and how much it rains. Then we find another city whose seasons line up — usually in another country, and not just down the road.
Southern places are compared in their opposite season, so a northern January is set against a southern July.
Very close, close, fair, and loose say how similar those two seasons are. Compare with… lets you try any other city; that score uses the same idea.
Köppen–Geiger groups climates by typical temperature and rainfall. The first letter is the group, then the seasonal pattern.
Second letter is the rain season: f year-round, s dry summer, w dry winter, m monsoon. In dry climates, W is desert and S is steppe. Third letter is summer heat: a hot, b warm, c cool, d bitter winter.
